Each year the Mays publishes the best new writing and visual arts from students at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge in a printed anthology. I was approached to create a visual identity for the project, and to typeset and design the printed book.
The theme for the 2014 anthology was ‘Play’ and the editors suggested retro gaming as a visual starting point. I used pixelation to reference that aesthetic and designed a simple and clean logo around this. I wanted to avoid the dark or clunky appearance of some retro games which would have overwhelmed the content. I also produced cosmetic design for the website, which was kept very minimal to suit the pared-down identity.
